2020 General Rate Increases

On trend with year’s past, shipping carriers have implemented rate increases across the board for 2020. We understand that it is important for the success and growth of your business to strategize appropriately and these rate changes will certainly affect your shipping strategy.

The carriers state that shipping rate increases occur each year in an effort to keep their service levels high, employ staff and to support expansion and capability enhancements. We have provided a brief overview of the changes you’ll see in the New Year for each carrier below.

UPS implemented their increased rates on December 29th, 2019, before the new year even started. UPS Ground, Air and International services have increased 4.9%. They have also started to add fees for billing changes, shipping prohibited items and undeliverable packages, as well as adding more area zip codes to delivery area surcharges. FedEx rate increases went into effect on January 6th, 2020 and are in line with the UPS rate increases. FedEx Express, Ground and Home Delivery have increased an average of 4.9% and FedEx Freight has increased approximately 5.9%. Furthermore, they have continued to charge higher fees for large packages and packages being delivered to extended delivery areas. The United States Postal Service rate increases are the smallest and will not go into effect until January 26th, 2020. Overall, the mailing services product prices will increase approximately 1.9%, while shipping services will see an average 3.5% rate increase.
